THE CHALLENGE:

Across the UK, thousands of commercial sites operate in a security grey zone. Construction compounds holding hundreds of thousands of pounds of plant and materials. Vacant properties, former retail units, mothballed industrial premises, development sites awaiting planning, can be sometimes sitting unoccupied and unprotected for months at a time. Temporary retail and market environments carrying high-value stock in locations with no permanent infrastructure.

These sites share a common profile: high theft risk, limited or no on-site power, no functioning alarm system, and response times (when incidents occur) that run to minutes while the damage is done in seconds.

The security industry has effective tools for many of these environments. ASEL’s WASP system — a rapidly deployable wireless alarm and detection tower — was built specifically for sites that can’t wait for permanent infrastructure. Battery-powered, self-contained, operational within a day.

It detects intrusion. It alerts. It records.

But detection alone does not stop a raid in progress. What these sites had consistently lacked was an active deterrent capable of operating the moment an intruder was identified, something that could close the gap between alarm and outcome without depending on a response that might be fifteen minutes away.

ASEL had already deployed Smoke Screen fog systems across a number of fixed client sites and understood their effectiveness as an active deterrent. Fog doesn’t wait for a response — it acts.

When triggered, security fog rapidly deploys a dense disruption cloud, disorientating intruders and obscuring stock, making it impossible to operate within the protected space. Can’t see it, can’t steal it. The technology works. The problem was installation: a conventional fog system requires a hardwired mains connection.

ASEL brought that constraint to Smoke Screen as a specific challenge: could a fog deterrent be integrated into the WASP X without any dependency on mains power or alarm infrastructure?

The answer required a fog system that could match the WASP X’s own standalone capability, self-contained, battery-independent, deployable without a power supply or alarm panel on site. Working together, ASEL and Smoke Screen identified that Sentinel Go’s own battery could be supplemented directly from the WASP’s solar input, removing every remaining installation dependency.

No hardwired connection. No electrician. No additional infrastructure. Fog deterrence, finally available on the sites that had always needed it most.

The Partner: ASEL

ASEL (Argenbright Security Europe Ltd) is a specialist security services company operating across the UK. Their service portfolio spans risk advisory, security guarding, security technology, temporary security, drone services, and vacant property protection.

Their WASP system (Wireless Alarm Site Protection) is a rapidly deployable perimeter intrusion detection tower designed for sites that require immediate, infrastructure-independent security. The WASP combines 360-degree infrared motion detection, high-definition real-time cameras, 110dB audio warnings, blue strobe lighting, GPS tracking, seismic monitoring, and a standalone power supply, making it operable in remote and temporary locations without external infrastructure.

The WASP is Secured By Design accredited — the only official police certification for security products in the UK — and connects to ASEL’s NSI Gold-certified Alarm Receiving Centre for 24/7 monitoring.

Having already deployed Smoke Screen fog systems across a number of client environments, ASEL came to Smoke Screen with a clear brief: make fog integration possible on the sites the WASP X was built for, without adding any dependency on mains power or alarm infrastructure. The answer was Sentinel Go.

The Solution: Sentinel Go inside WASP X

ASEL’s integration of Sentinel Go into the WASP X chassis creates a single deployable unit that combines perimeter intrusion detection with active fog deterrence, with no requirement for mains power, a dedicated alarm panel, or an electrician on site.

How the integration works

  • The WASP X detects an intruder via its 360-degree infrared motion sensors
  • The detection signal triggers Sentinel Go, which rapidly deploys dense fog as an active disruption, disorientating the intruder and obscuring stock and exits
  • The intruder cannot see the stock causing confusion and disruption
  • Simultaneously, the WASP activates its 110dB audio warning, blue strobe, and floodlights
  • ASEL’s NSI Gold-certified ARC receives real-time HD footage and manages the response
  • The entire sequence operates from battery power, with Sentinel Go powered by it’s own internal batteries.

Why Sentinel Go

Sentinel Go is the UK’s first portable battery-powered security fog system. Unlike conventional fog units that require a hardwired fused spur connection, Sentinel Go can be powered in a variety of ways: internal batteries, trickle charge from compatible PIDs or existing alarm panels, mains via transformer, or, as in the ASEL integration, trickle charged from the WASP’s solar input. This flexibility makes it deployable across a far wider range of sites than any previous fog system.

This makes it uniquely suited to the WASP X deployment environment, sites that are temporary, vacant, off-grid, or lacking alarm infrastructure. The WASP X already operates independently of mains power via its standalone battery supply. Adding Sentinel Go to that ecosystem required no additional power infrastructure and removed the last remaining barrier to fog deployment at these site types.

“With so many of our customers already deploying Smoke Screens within their premises and high‑value areas, it made perfect sense to take integration a step further. By enhancing WASP on Wheels with a battery‑powered fog generator, we can now provide an effective deterrent even where there is no functioning alarm system or power on site. This makes Smoke Screens a natural and highly effective complementary addition to our Wireless Alarm Site Protection solutions.” Frazer Clark, WASP Product Lead, ASEL

Who Benefits

The WASP X with Smoke Screen integration is designed for the environments where conventional security infrastructure is absent, impractical, or uneconomic to install:

  • Construction sites, high-value plant and materials, often isolated, no permanent power supply
  • Vacant and mothballed properties, systematically targeted, no alarm panel, no on-site power
  • Redevelopment and refurbishment sites, infrastructure stripped or not yet installed
  • Indoor retail environments, warehouses, distribution hubs, shopping centres requiring fog coverage during closing hours without complex rewiring.
  • Sites identified as at elevated risk, during predictive or preventative security assessments
  • Extensive perimeter sites (wind and solar farms, agricultural land, rural storage) where mains connection is not viable

For security installers and distributors, the WASP X with Smoke Screen removes the two most common objections to fog system deployment: the wiring requirement and the dependency on an existing alarm panel. The combined system deploys in a day, requires no electrical contractor, and operates from battery power throughout.

Combined Capabilities

The Argument for Security Installers

The WASP X with Smoke Screen integration opens conversations that have previously been closed.

For every site where an installer has had to walk away (because there was no alarm panel) no mains supply, no budget for an electrician on top of the unit cost, this combination changes the answer. The detection layer is the WASP. The deterrence layer is Sentinel Go. Both run on battery power.

The commercial opportunity is significant. Construction site security is a growing market, driven by sustained growth in UK infrastructure projects and the consistent high-value theft these sites attract. Vacant property portfolios, including retail units, commercial premises, and development sites represent a large underserved segment for fog system deployment. And the combination of two systems from established, accredited manufacturers provides a credible, defensible specification for procurement.

  • ARC activation – HD footage and alerts active from day one

No electrician required. No alarm panel required. No delay.

About Smoke Screen

Smoke Screen manufactures security fog systems in the UK. The company’s technology rapidly deploys dense fog as an active disruption technique disorientating intruders and obscuring stock, making it impossible to operate effectively within the protected space.

The principle is simple: police response to a commercial burglary averages 8–20 minutes. The average smash-and-grab raid takes under 5. Every conventional deterrent (alarm, CCTV) operates outside that window. Security fog operates inside it.

Smoke Screen products are used across retail, jewellery, banking, and commercial warehouse environments throughout the UK. The company’s systems are recommended by thousands of previously protected businesses.

Sentinel Go is Smoke Screen’s newest product: the UK’s first portable battery-powered security fog system, designed specifically for the sites conventional fog systems could not previously reach.
